Mill Road maple syrup

Doug Keto explains sap collection to students

Maple tapping is not an exact science and requires experience, intuition, and a little luck to effectively maximize the yield of tapped trees. A variety of factors influence the quantity, quality, and timing of sap flow including, but not limited to: atmospheric pressure, precipitation, temperature, stress events in the previous years (droughts, heavy precipitation, frosts, pests, etc), geolocation, nutrient availability, tree species, tree age, slope, sunlight, etc.

What is seen as a challenge for maple syrup producers is a fantastic educational opportunity for our students! We here at Mill Road relish every chance to engage in the art of sugaring and especially enjoy our final product on some fresh pancakes!
