Station 2

Behind the station marker, you will see several thin trees about 5 or 6 feet from the path. These are cedar trees, actually junipers, and they are a "pioneer" species. They are often the first to begin growing in a field. Because they grow slowly, they are quickly overtaken by other trees, which choke off the sunlight and eventually cause the cedars to die. Cedar wood is very resistant to rot, so the dead trees often remain standing long after. Both sets of benches have cedar logs for bases because of this resistance to rot.
