Station 4

Station 4 is the outdoor forest classroom. This is a good place to sit quietly on the benches and listen to the sounds of the forest around you. After a few minutes, animals will begin to move around. You may hear loud squeaking nearby. If you look carefully, you will see a chipmunk warning other chipmunks that danger is here. Larger animals will hear you coming and run away or hide. A variety of birds use the forest as a habitat, but spring is the best time to hear amazing bird calls. The longer that you sit quietly, the more you will see and hear. Life and death struggles are happening all around you, but you have to be alert to see them! That rustling under the leaves may be a tiny shrew hunting insects. They have poor eyesight but must eat their own weight in food every day or they will die.    If you carefully lift the rope handles on the boards around the benches, you may see creatures that live under logs. Some move fast and some move slow, but they are all delicate and should not be touched. Please put the boards back where you found them.
